Newcastle star will still get EFL Cup winners medal even if Man Utd beat Magpies

Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka might have to root for Manchester United in the EFL Cup final later this month.

Eddie Howe's soaring Magpies meet Erik ten Hag's rampant Red Devils in the final on February 26, with both clubs looking to end painful trophyless periods.

Dubravka won't feature at the Wembley showpiece, but has found himself in a unique position where he will get his hands on a winners medal if his side loses.

This is because the Slovak international was on loan at Manchester United earlier in the season, and made two appearances for them in the EFL Cup, against Aston Villa and Burnley.

As such, he's included as a part of their EFL Cup squad, even though he was recalled by Newcastle on New Year's Day.

The saga has left the 34-year-old cup-tied, which means not only is he prohibited from being on Newcastle's bench during the final, but he also won't receive a winners medal if the Magpies emerge victorious.

Who will Dubravka be supporting in the EFL Cup final? Let us know in the comments section below.

Dubravka was Newcastle's first-choice keeper for four seasons until he was unseated by Nick Pope in the summer.

He moved to Old Trafford on loan, but failed to make a single appearance in the league while deputising for David De Gea, and moved back to St James' Park last month.

The former Sparta Prague star is expected to quit Newcastle in the summer, but will he be leaving with an EFL Cup winners medal? Time will tell.
