Newcastle United are planning an audacious transfer bid for Fiorentina hitman Dusan Vlahovic in the region of €100million (£85m), according to reports. Eddie Howe’s side may be languishing below the dotted lines of Premier League relegation, yet the footballing world is bracing itself for the first flex of Newcastle’s financial muscles in the January transfer window.

The Magpies became the wealthiest side in the Premier League when a consortium, spear-headed by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the Reuben Brothers, purchased the club from Mike Ashley for £305m.

The PIF alone is estimated to be worth around £320bn, making them significantly wealthier than all of the owners in the Premier League combined.

Reinforcements are desperately needed at St James’ Park as they are currently heading towards the Championship.

And according to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Newcastle may be preparing a €100m (£85m) offer for the Serbian hitman.

Vlahovic is currently leading the race for the Serie A Golden Boot, having hammered home fifteen goals in seventeen appearances for Fiorentina.

His clinical finishing and deadly movement has made him a nightmare for Serie A defenders, who have at times seemed powerless to stop him.

The 21-year-old is hot property, and it appears La Viola have also become reluctant to the precocious striker exiting the club.

“We’ve offered Vlahovic the highest contract ever in the history of Fiorentina, several times,” Fiorentina chief executive Joe Barone said to La Repubblica.

“Both Dusan and his agent made us realise that they do not want to accept. Our bid is still on the table.”

Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso has often appeared resigned to the likelihood of his team’s star striker leaving.

Juventus, Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have also been monitoring his performances in Italy in recent seasons, however, a move to the Premier League appears more likely.

“I don’t know if Juventus are able to sign Vlahovic in January,” Commisso said in a statement released on the Fiorentina website.

“But I want to say to Juventus or Arsenal that we [Fiorentina] are the ‘owners’ of Vlahovic. They should open talks with us, not with his agents.”

While Fiorentina are believed to be willing to cash in on their talisman in the upcoming January transfer window, Vlahovic’ agent, Davide Torchia stated the striker would prefer to depart Vincenzo Italiano’s side at the end of the season.

“I don’t think Vlahovic will leave in January,” he stated in an interview with Calciomercato at the beginning of November.

“In June he can go to Juventus, but also to many other clubs If he focuses on the technical aspects then it may be okay to stay at Fiorentina to continue his growth.

If he makes an economic one, Italians we are automatically out, and then he has to go to play in a league that has more money than Serie A which is the Premier League.”

While Newcastle’s transfer fee and financial power is a significant allure, they are disadvantaged in the fact that the 21-year-old is reportedly looking for a side who have significant aspirations of challenging for the Champions League title.
