Newcastle ‘poised to sign Kieran Trippier next week’ as transfer plans change

Newcastle United could complete the signing of Kieran Tripper as early as next week – but they've been forced to change their transfer plans.

Trippier, who was heavily linked with Manchester United in the summer, was identified as the number one target by the new Magpies hierarchy for the January transfer window.

Defensive additions are the priority at St James' Park and the 31-year-old right-back will bring with him a significant amount of experience.

As his contract with Atletico Madrid is up at the end of the season, it is hoped the deal can be completed as an 'early statement of intent', according to The Telegraph.

However, the Toon are now having to search for a new forward after Callum Wilson limped off against the Red Devils on Monday.

The striker picked up a calf injury which is feared could keep him sidelined for months.

Eddie Howe's task was already difficult enough without losing such a key figure, so the club have made signing a replacement a 'pressing need' in the market.

With Joelinton transiting into a central midfield role, Dwight Gayle would otherwise be the only remaining frontman option.

Newcastle have a list of targets to pursue once the window opens on Saturday and are said to be confident of further early signings as well as Trippier.

Negotiations for the England international are the most advanced of all.

As well as other deals, they've been working with Atletico for a number of weeks and Trippier is keen to make his Premier League return.

Further targets reportedly include Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Tottenham's Joe Rodon, both centre-halves.

And Lille defender Sven Botman, who has previously been admired by fellow Prem side Wolves, also features on the list.
