Newcastle United are supposedly monitoring the situation of ex-Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey. The Welshman is going through a tough time at Juventus, with returning boss Massimiliano Allegri only using him sparingly so far this campaign.

During the summer window, a name like Ramsey’s would never have been mentioned in the same breath as the Magpies.

Mike Ashley’s 14-year tenure as the club’s owner was characterised by frugality, which has actually left the new owners with around £150million to spend over the next 12 months without breaching Financial Fair Play regulations.

As a result, the squad is likely to be overhauled with only the very best talent keeping their place in the side.

Although Joe Willock was acquired for big money in the summer, another central-midfielder will supposedly be on the Saudi-led consortium’s list of targets to bring Newcastle to the next level.

According to Calciomercato, Ramsey is the kind of big-name player who the Magpies are likely to go after in January.

They may have to stave off rival interest from the likes of Wolves, Crystal Palace and Everton, however, who have also flirted with the idea of making a move.

Now approaching his 31st birthday, Ramsey has been on big wages in Turin and he would likely demand the same if he switched to Tyneside.

Given the unprecedented wealth of the club’s new owners, that should not be a problem.

Ramsey’s time at Juve has not been a disaster, but he never hit the heights he did in an Arsenal shirt.

He had been a regular feature under previous managers like Andrea Pirlo, but since Allegri’s return the writing could be on the wall that his time in Italy is all but over.

The Magpies would certainly be getting their hands on a player with plenty of topflight experience, not to mention a boat-load of international caps for Wales.

An issue which remains up in the air is which coach would be there to receive Ramsey if he did make the move in January.

Steve Bruce still has a job as it stands, but his seven-game winless streak to start the Premier League season is unlikely to keep him there much longer.

The new owners have lofty ambitions, and their list of managerial targets such as Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers reflects that.

If Ramsey and whichever new boss they pick out are enticed by the challenge at St James’ Park, they could be two faces that characterise the start of an exciting project in the north-east.
