Newcastle United may not be able to make any signings in January – because no one will want to join them. That is the opinion of former Aston Villa captain Gabriel Agbonlahor, who is worried the Magpies could be relegated this season.

Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian-backed takeover was completed last month to finally end the ownership of the much-maligned Mike Ashley.

But results have not picked up in the resulting weeks.

Manager Steve Bruce has been sacked, with Graeme Jones placed in interim charge until a permanent successor has been found.

The Magpies are yet to win a match in the Premier League this season, losing six of their 10 games.

Their tally of four points means they sit second bottom, six points from safety.

Newcastle now have the richest owners in the English top flight thanks to the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund.

Agbonlahor says new signings will need to be brought into the club as soon as possible to help the fight against relegation.

But he reckons it will be hard to find players who want to join if they are a long way off safety come January 1.

“If I was a Newcastle fan, I would be very worried this season about them going down,” he said on talkSPORT.

“I feel that Steve Bruce has left now, Jones has come in. Has anything changed? Not really.

“I still feel Palace battered them in the game [last weekend], they still battered them. It’s just some of the players are not good enough.

“If I’m Newcastle now, as the owners, I’m thinking, ‘I need players signing on the first of January.’

“They haven’t got a game to spare. They’re going to need players in that changing room and it will sort of be like ‘The Great Escape’.

“You look at them now; they’re on four points, Burnley got the win when they needed one, Leeds beat Norwich and there is going to start being a gap.

“Crystal Palace have found wins, Brentford can get wins, Wolves can. You start looking at the table now, I’m looking and I can see Newcastle going down, I really can.

“I’m not saying that to wind up Newcastle fans, but I’m very worried for them. Even January, who are they going to get in?

“If they are ten points adrift in January, who is going to want to come?”
