Graeme Jones is set to have the chance to impress as Newcastle United interim manager until next month’s international break, according to reports. Newcastle are yet to decide on Steve Bruce’s successor at St. James’ Park after sacking him this week.
According to The Telegraph, Jones will remain interim boss for the next three games as Newcastle’s new owners ponder their options.
Amanda Staveley, leader of the consortium that bought the club from Mike Ashley earlier this month, has pinpointed Paulo Fonseca as her preferred candidate.
But, despite the ex-AS Roma manager’s interview going well, it has been stressed that he is just one of a selection of potential replacements.
Newcastle’s owners want to help the club return to the top of English football and are working hard to identify the correct football specialists to lead the way.
Jones expects to be in the dugout for three crucial Premier League fixtures as the Magpies search for their first win of the season.
Newcastle travel to Crystal Palace this weekend before facing the daunting task of hosting Chelsea on Tyneside.
Jones will then take his side to Brighton and Hove Albion before the final international break of 2021.
The 51-year-old has been informed that Newcastle don’t expect to announce Bruce’s successor imminently – leaving him with a chance to stake a claim for the exciting role.
Fonseca is currently viewed as the favourite, but Newcastle would rather give their next manager a short-term contract than meet the Portuguese’s long-term demands worth £6million a year.
Other names in the conversation include Eddie Howe, Lucien Favre, Roberto Martinez and Steven Gerrard.
Frank Lampard has also been heavily touted for the position after his Chelsea sacking in January.
Some figures believe someone with Premier League experience is crucial amid the club’s fight to remain in the competition – and Lampard is a bonafide legend.

Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian owners, who own 80 per cent through the state’s Public Investment Fund, are enticed by the idea of Lampard.
They believe a Premier League icon would help attract big-name players and sponsors in the early stages of their era at the helm.
As it stands, though, it seems like no decisions will be made until next month’s international break.
Jones will be fully focused on helping pull Newcastle out of their current rut and playing a role in the start of the club’s new age.
