Newcastle have firmed up their interest in Sandro Tonali after opening discussions with AC Milan over the Italy international midfielder.

The Magpies are determined to add a midfielder with Inter Milan wanting £70m for Nicolo Barella and Leicester City wanting £60m for James Maddison who has been leaning towards a move to Tottenham.

It is expected that Newcastle’s opening bid for Tonali will be £42million (€50million).

Eddie Howe is open to moving Bruno Guimaraes further up the pitch if Tonali, 23, arrives.

Tonali, who has 14 senior caps for Italy, is set to feature for his country at the Under-21 European Championship.

After starting his career at Brescia, Tonali joined AC Milan on loan in 2020 and made the deal permanent a year later.

In total he has made 130 appearances for Milan and won the Serie A title in the 2021-22 season.

He also helped Milan to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.

Newcastle entered talks with Inter Milan regarding Barella but stressed that it could be a ‘difficult’ deal to do.

Maddison only has a year left on his contract, which means Leicester are likely to sell him this summer. However, Tottenham are currently favourites to sign him.
