Newcastle United have launched their bid for Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

The 21-year old has one year left on contract and Newcastle are hoping to prise him away from his boyhood club for around £10million.

Kamara can play in midfield or defence to provide quality cover in a number of positions which suits Newcastle’s restricted budget.

They missed out on Mario Lemina who left Southampton for Nice and are waiting for a definitive answer from Arsenal midfielder Joe Willock over whether he wants to return.

Steve Bruce is desperate for new additions ahead of the new season but the club’s prospective sale means owner Mike Ashley is reluctant to invest heavily.

Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe is also wanted on loan but the Old Trafford club are understood to be asking a £5m loan fee.

It is understood the lack of transfer progress is also frustrating players well aware they need to strengthen to avoid another flirtation with relegation.

Bruce hopes they can have more success with their bid for France U21 international Kamara.

Otherwise they will be forced to examine other options once again.

The Magpies are waiting to hear if Joe Willock wants to make a return to the club this season
