Newcastle have upped their efforts to land a new striker in the final week of the summer transfer window having reportedly submitted an offer for Rennes forward Martin Terrier alongside several others. Fresh from their 3-3 draw with reigning Premier League champions Manchester City at the weekend, the Magpies appear determined to add to their squad over the next week.
Having moved to sign Sven Botman, Matt Targett and Nick Pope earlier in the summer, Eddie Howe’s side have since turned their attention to adding more firepower to their forward line. Newcastle have been linked to a whole host of strikers over the past few weeks and, as the transfer window nears its conclusion, the Magpies appear to have acted on their interest in a number of targets.
According to Peter O’Rourke, Newcastle have lodged bids for several attacking options, including Rennes striker Terrier. However, it is thought the Ligue 1 outfit are determined to retain the 25-year-old in the current window and are even in talks with the forward over a new contract.
Leeds had previously been credited with showing interest in the former Lille and Lyon man, who netted 21 goals in Ligue 1 last season. It was then thought that the Whites baulked at Rennes’ asking price for the attacker after learning it would likely cost in the region of £30million to secure his services this summer. It remains to be seen how much Newcastle have put on the table.

It has also been suggested that the Magpies could make a late move for Terrier’s fellow Rennes forward Gaetan Laborde before the transfer window closes next week. The French pair have found their futures shrouded in uncertainty after Rennes added the highly-rated Arnaud Kalimuendo to their attack, signing the 20-year-old forward from Paris Saint-Germain in a £21m deal.
Meanwhile, Newcastle have also been linked to Valencia striker Maxi Gomez, Leeds winger Jack Harrison and Watford forward Joao Pedro. The Magpies are understood to have placed an offer in the region of £25m plus add-ons for the latter and it is thought a deal to see the 20-year-old Brazilian head to St. James’ Park could be concluded within the next week.

In response to suggestions a deal for Pedro had been concluded when asked ahead of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup clash with Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday night, Howe said: “That’s not entirely accurate but I’m not sort of dealing with these things minute to minute, I’m sort of in the background hearing what’s happening but I don’t think that’s correct.”
When further probed on who the Magpies could sign before the transfer deadline, Howe added: “If I knew I would be able to tell you… Currently it’s an ever changing thing… I would love to add to it [squad] and bring in players who can make a real difference to the team. We are working very hard to achieve that.”
