Gary Neville and Alan Shearer remain two stalwarts of English football given their recent exploits into punditry, with Neville now one of Sky Sports’ most popular pundits and Shearer being a heralded figure on the BBC. The pair met up on Neville’s new ‘Overlap’ YouTube show and the Manchester United legend was brutally shredded by Shearer.

Neville’s popularity on Sky Sports and Twitter has given him a status as arguably the most valued pundit in the country.

His views on politics, tactics and an increased reputation has allowed him to start the ‘Overlap’ channel on YouTube.

Guests of the past have included Harry Maguire, Roy Keane and Harry Kane amongst others – with Shearer the latest addition.

Yet in a ‘quick-fire questions’ round, Shearer brutally tore Neville to shreds with just two words.

Neville asked Shearer a simple “most difficult defender you had to play against?” question, given that Shearer had played against some of the world’s best in John Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Jaap Stam.

Yet the Newcastle legend’s reply simply had Neville laughing, after saying “Not you! Tony Adams.”

The response garnered a chuckle from Neville, who alluded to Shearer’s tough playing style.

“You always used to pull on my back didn’t you!” Neville said.

“I was always like ‘Oh no, he’s there behind me!'”

Shearer is still the Premier League’s all-time top scorer with 260 goals.

And given that Harry Kane is the only current player in sight with 166 goals, it appears that will be Shearer’s record for some time to come.

The Geordie managed Newcastle in 2009 but ultimately couldn’t save them from relegation.

Unai Emery rejected a role on Tyneside after being uncertain about the future with the Magpies.

And it has led Eddie Howe to be linked with the managerial job in the north east.
