Newcastle are investigating Jamaal Lascelles’ involvement in a city-centre brawl, after police made an appeal for information.
Mail Sport understands the club appreciate the defender was acting in self-defence during the incident in Newcastle on August 20, but the hierarchy will review the situation. Sources close to the player hope they take a fair view of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Mail Sport revealed on Tuesday that Lascelles was on a night out with his younger brother and a friend following Newcastle’s 1-0 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday, August 19 when trouble flared with a group of six-to-eight unknown men at 4am the following day.
It is said that one of the men elbowed Lascelles’ 19-year-old sibling in the throat in an ‘unproved attack’, prompting the defender to step in before he was ‘punched from all angles’ by the gang. He pushed one man to the ground and was calling for calm when he was blindsided and punched in the face, causing injury to his ear. He responded by a throwing a punch in the direction of the man who had hit him.
The gang allegedly threatened to shoot Lascelles during the violent fracas, which occurred after he had left nightclub Chinawhite. The player’s friend was left unconscious after being kicked in the head and he was taken to hospital before being spoken to by police.
