Newcastle identify Conor Coady as top target with Amanda Staveley a ‘huge fan’

Newcastle have identified Wolves captain and England star Conor Coady as a top target in the January transfer window.

The Toon are drawing up a list of possible new recruits with the club facing the threat of relegation from the Premier League.

Coady, 28, is liked by Frank McParland, one of Amanda Staveley’s trusted friends who is set to take a senior role at St James' Park.

McParland worked with the centre-half at Liverpool when he was making his way in the game and helped him on his path to the top.

Wolves would not want to sell their star defender, especially to a club who are looking to overtake them in the table.

It would take a huge sum of cash – somewhere in the region of £20million or more – to persuade them to trade with a rival.

That sort of money is no object to Newcastle following their £300million takeover by Saudi's Public Investment Fund, who are able to meet the valuation and offer big wages to tempt Coady.

He is the type of player that the Magpies could build a team around in the short to medium term as they look to move their way up the Premier League table.

Would Coady be a good signing for Newcastle? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Coady would offer top-flight experience and leadership qualities, as well as his natural talent as a defender.

Losing the England star would be a bitter blow for Wolves, who would be required to enter the market for a replacement, something not altogether simple in January.

Newcastle will need a manager in place first – one who sees Coady as an asset – but The Sun report he is in their thinking for January regardless.

The north east club have also been linked with a move for Burnley centre-half James Tarkowski, whose contract is up in the summer.

Like Coady, he also played under McParland at Brentford as well as at Turf Moor.
