Newcastle ‘eye Wijnaldum loan’ with star ‘not happy’ at PSG

Newcastle United are reportedly set to make a sensational swoop for PSG midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum – just six months after the ex-Liverpool ace left the Premier League.

The Dutch midfielder snubbed the chance to stay at Anfield to link up with the French giants on a free transfer in the summer.

But Wijnaldum's dream switch to Paris has quickly descended into a nightmare, and he admitted earlier this season that he is not "completely happy" in the French capital.

The 31-year-old is said to be open to a quick exit from the Parc des Princes after starting just nine Ligue 1 games this term for Mauricio Pochettino's side.

And a new report from L'Equipe claims that could pave the way for Newcastle to try and lure Wijnaldum back to St.James Park for a second stint on Tyneside.

PSG, however, reportedly have no desire to cut their losses on Wijnaldum – despite the midfielder's eagerness to cut his spell in Paris short.

Wijnaldum spent three years at Newcastle after arriving in the Premier League from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2015.

He racked up 19 goals in over 130 appearances for the Magpies before Liverpool snapped up his signature in 2018.

Wijnaldum established himself as a key component in the Liverpool sides that went on to achieve both Premier League and Champions League glory under Jurgen Klopp.

But he walked out on Anfield in the summer after refusing to pen an extension to the three-year deal he initially inked after his Newcastle move.

Recent reports have linked the midfield maestro with a return to England – although it remains to be seen if anyone would be able to afford his whopping salary, which is reportedly in the region of £300,000-a-week.

That wouldn't be a problem for Newcastle, who are now the wealthiest club in the world after their Saudi-backed £305m takeover was rubberstamped earlier this year.

New boss Eddie Howe is expected to be handed a healthy transfer warchest to try and ease Newcastle's relegation worries.

The Magpies are currently two points adrift of safety and have played a staggering three games more than 17th placed Watford.

As well as being linked with a move for Wijnaldum, Newcastle have also been credited with an interest in defensive duo Kieran Trippier and Sven Botman.
