Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Lyon to sign Bruno Guimaraes, according to reports. Newcastle are set to pay the French side around £30million for the midfielder. Guimaraes only emerged as a top target for the Magpies earlier this week but it appears a deal is set to go through ahead of Monday’s deadline.
Reports on Wednesday claimed Newcastle had agreed a fee with Lyon for Guimaraes.
However, Lyon released a statement claiming that was not the case.
The statement on their official website read: “Olympique Lyonnais categorically denies the false information disseminated by many media reporting an agreement between Newcastle and OL for the transfer of Brazilian international midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.
“In this transfer window period where the slightest rumor is often presented as reality, Olympique Lyonnais reminds that only information officially released by the club is to be taken into consideration.”

However, talkSPORT now claims an agreement has in fact been met at around £30m for the Brazil international.
The report says Newcastle worked ‘tirelessly’ to reach an agreement with Lyon.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says a deal is close but has not quite been concluded for Guimaraes.
Romano says Newcastle are confident of completing the transfer and the next few hours are key.

Guimaraes is currently in Ecuador, where he was named on the bench for the World Cup qualifier.
He has become a key part of the Lyon side since arriving from Athletico Paranaense in January 2020.
Arsenal were interested in signing him before he joined Lyon and have again been linked with his signature this month.
But it appears Newcastle have won the race to bring him to the Premier League.
Guimaraes is set to become the Toon’s third signing of the January window.
They brought in right-back Kieran Trippier and striker Chris Wood earlier this month.
Newcastle are not set to finish their business at Guimaraes though.
They want to sign a centre-back, though a deal for Diego Carlos is looking increasingly unlikely.
Newcastle have seen a bid for Brighton defender Dan Burn rejected by the south coast club and are also interested in Bayer Leverkusen left-back Mitchel Bakker.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe spoke about his club’s transfer business while at the training base in Saudi Arabia this week.
However, he said there was no news from the club’s hierarchy over further incomings.
Howe told NUFC TV: “I think they have no news to tell anybody at the moment, but I’m keeping regularly updated and finger on the pulse as to what is happening.
“As we know, it is a difficult window and we just hope we can get a couple more additions to boost the squad.”
