Newcastle are expected to be busy in the January transfer window in a bid to bolster their squad and avoid relegation. Steve Bruce’s reign in charge ended just weeks after the £305million takeover by the Saudi-led consortium.
The new owners took their time in finding a replacement for Bruce, with a host of names being linked with the vacant post.
Eventually the decision was made to bring in Howe, who had been out of work since leaving Bournemouth in August 2020.
The 43-year-old has been working with the players who aren’t away on international duty ahead of his first game in charge this weekend.
But the international break would have also presented Howe with an opportunity to understand where he wants the focus to be on in the January transfer window.

It’s been suggested that more firepower will be brought in further up the pitch to help give Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin more support.
However, improving Newcastle’s defensive frailties appears to be Hower’s No 1 priority.
That’s according to FootMercato, who claim the former Bournemouth boss has already spoken to the owners on what he wants.
The report states that Paris Saint-Germain starlet Abdou Diallo is the newest name on Howe’s list.
DON’T MISS
The 25-year-old has proven to be a versatile option for Mauricio Pochettino with the ability to play at full-back and in central defence.
He’s largely been deployed at left-back under Pochettino, but Diallo faces competition from both Bernat and Nuno Mendes in that position.
It is claimed that Diallo is being ‘closely monitored’ by Newcastle with just six weeks until the January transfer window opens.
Newcastle’s spending is unlikely to stop there though with Amanda Staveley previously stating that money will be available.
For now, Howe will need to find a way to secure Newcastle’s first win of the season with the Magpies currently 19th in the table.
Only Norwich have conceded more goals than Newcastle’s 24 through 11 games and they’re the only Premier League side not to win.
Closing the gap to the teams above them will be crucial in their bid to attract players to the club in January.
There are currently five points between Newcastle and Watford, who sit 17th in the table.
