Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has reportedly drawn up a list of five players he wants to recruit in the January transfer window. The Magpies are expected to spend vast sums of cash in the aftermath of their incredible £305million October takeover.

Howe is entering his first transfer window as Newcastle boss after replacing Steve Bruce in November.

Bruce parted ways with his boyhood club soon after the Saudi Public Investment Fund-backed purchase was completed.

Newcastle were winless until last weekend, when they finally earned their first three points of the season against Burnley.

Howe has a huge task overturning the club’s form. They are three points from safety and face Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United in their next four games.

But the 19th-placed side find themselves in a unique position.

Due to their takeover, they will likely be able to spend the vast sums of money necessary to claw them away from danger.

Howe has now apparently given the new owners a list of five players who he wants to sign in the new year.

According to the Daily Mail, four defenders make up the shortlist, with Howe clearly unhappy with the amount of goals his side are conceded.

Newcastle have let in 30 goals in just 15 matches this term. Only Norwich, with 31, have conceded more.

The report claims that Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly, who worked under Howe at the Cherries, is wanted by the 44-year-old. Kelly cost Bournemouth £13m in 2019.

Also on the list are Borussia Monchengladbach’s Mathias Ginter. The Germany international is out of contract at the end of the season.

Tottenham’s Joe Rodon is also of interest. As is Lille’s Sven Botman, who has previously been linked with Liverpool.

The only other player who is being targeted by Howe is a midfielder.

Howe prefers a possession-based style and has already suggested that Jonjo Shelvey will see more game time under him than he did under Bruce.

Arsenal outcast Mohamed Elneny is apparently wanted by Howe.

The Egyptian has played 137 times for the Gunners but only seven of those appearances have come this season.

He has frequently been linked with a departure from the Emirates Stadium.
