Women’s World Cup 2023 co-hosts New Zealand have been knocked out of the tournament following a 0-0 draw to Switzerland in Group A.
With the Phillippines falling to a 6-0 defeat to Norway, the Europeans ensured that they progressed into the knock-out stages with Switzerland.
The Football Ferns have made unwanted history as the first host nation to exit in the group stage of a Women’s World Cup.
New Zealand gave a good account of themselves as they faced off against Switzerland, putting their rivals under pressure early on in front of a sold out crowd.
However, they could not find a breakthrough despite their best efforts in the match.

Jacqui Hand saw her effort smash the woodwork just 23 minutes in as they pushed for an opener in a tight first half.
Seraina Pibuel also had a shot saved by New Zealand goalkeeper Vic Esson before the break.
At half-time, the writing was on the wall for the host nation. They knew they had to win as Norway were 3-0 up in their match.
However, they came out for the second half and looked unimpressive as Switzerland controlled possession.
Gaelle Thalmann had to make a flurry of late saves to deny New Zealand as Switzerland held on to the 0-0 draw to knock the hosts out of their tournament.
