Chelsea have finally confirmed the capture of Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig – and it hasn't taken fans long to compare him to former Blues flop Timo Werner.

The Frenchman is the first of what many expect to be a heap of summer arrivals at Stamford Bridge, with the London club eyeing up reinforcements in central midfield, up front and in goal.

Chelsea all but tied up a £60m deal for Nkunku last year, with medical tests reportedly taking place as early as July 2022, and judging by his form over the past couple of seasons (58 goals in 88 matches), Blues fans are in for a treat.

Nevertheless, supporters on social media are branding him "Werner 2.0", and given the striking similarities between Nkunku and the hapless German they might have a point.

"Nkunku is Werner 2.0. They're so similar. Bagging goals in the Bundesliga doesn't mean you'll bag goals in the Prem," one fan commented:

"Chelsea have signed another Timo Werner haha," wrote another, while a third chortled: "Nkunku to Chelsea has Timo Werner 2.0 written all over it. No way he's breaking the Chelsea striker's curse."

Many Chelsea fans were similarly pessimistic, with one tweeting: "Honestly praying Nkunku doesn’t turn out like Werner." Another nervous Blues fan added: "I hope Nkunku succeeds at Chelsea. I don’t want another Leipzig to Chelsea failure like Werner."

Comparisons to Werner are somewhat inevitable considering Nkunku has joined Chelsea from the same club they signed the Germany international from back in 2020 – and for a similar fee too.

Nkunku is also a fast-paced forward with an impressive goal record in the Bundesliga, just like Werner, though it's fair to say success in Germany has very rarely translated to success at Stamford Bridge (*cough* Kai Havertz *cough* Christian Pulisic).

Quite where Nkunku will fit in a Mauricio Pochettino team remains to be seen, but it's worth noting that the former PSG man isn't an out-and-out striker, which means it's unlikely he'll be leading the line for Chelsea next season, like Werner did.

Speaking to Chelsea's official website, Nkunku said: "I am incredibly happy to be joining Chelsea,' said Nkunku. 'A big effort was made to bring me to the club and I am looking forward to meeting my new coach and team-mates and showing the Chelsea supporters what I can do on the pitch.

"Having played in Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga, I now want to play in the Premier League, one of the strongest leagues in the world. I am very excited for this challenge and will be proud to wear the Chelsea shirt."
