Neville mocks Liverpool and Carragher over fourth straight home loss

‘It’s been very difficult in mockdown, I mean meltdown, I mean lockdown’: Gary Neville revels in Liverpool’s demise and taunts pal Jamie Carragher as he toasts Liverpool’s derby defeat and fourth Anfield loss in a row

  • Liverpool went nearly three years in the league without losing at their fortress
  • Defeats to Burnley, Brighton, Manchester City and Everton have followed though
  • Neville urged Jamie Carragher to get his boots on after the first half at Anfield
  • The hosts’ woes were compounded by an injury to captain Jordan Henderson

Gary Neville is once again revelling in Liverpool’s struggles after the Reds’ latest home league defeat against city rivals Everton.

A third-minute strike from Richarlison and a controversial late penalty by Gylfi Sigurdsson sealed the win to as Jurgen Klopp’s men slipped to their fourth loss in a row at Anfield, the first time that has happened since 1923.

Neville started sticking the boot in at half-time, telling Carragher to ‘go and get your kit on!’ after the hosts’ poor display during the first period.

The Sky Sports pundit’s mockery went up a notch when referee Chris Kavanagh upheld his original decision to give a penalty despite called over by VAR to the monitor after Dominic Calvert-Lewin tripped over Trent Alexander-Arnold having seen his shot saved by Alisson.

Neville uploaded a video sniggering, with the caption: ‘They’ve only sent him over to make em think it was being overturned!’

Specsavers got in on the exchange, saying that they had got Kavanagh to give the penalty as a belated birthday present for Neville, who replied with the praying emoji.

The former Manchester United right back’s final contribution was a video of him with a glass of red in his hand, pretending to trip over his words.

Despite Neville’s glee, his old club are 10 points adrift of neighbours Manchester City and will hope to take what seems like a nailed-on three points against Newcastle while Pep Guardiola’s men travel to Arsenal earlier in the day.

Liverpool sit sixth meanwhile, three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, and are sweating on the fitness of Jordan Henderson after the captain hobbled off after half an hour with what seemed like a groin problem.

He was replaced by Nathaniel Phillips, with new signing Ben Davies remaining on the bench for the third game since his arrival from Championship side Preston at the start of this month
