Neville hits out at Woodward and Glazers after Man United lose to City
Gary Neville brands Manchester United’s miserable possession stats in the 4-1 loss to Manchester City ‘a fitting memorial to the “Ed Woodward/Glazer” last 10 years of mismanagement’ in a savage tweet the morning after the defeat
- Gary Neville was furious with the manner of Manchester United’s defeat to City
- Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez scored twice as City swept United aside
- Neville said that his old club ‘gave up’ in the final 25 minutes of the encounter
Gary Neville’s Twitter bio is ‘Attack The Day’ and the former Manchester United right-back was true to his mantra on Monday morning.
The Sky Sports pundit took to social media before 6am on Monday morning with a screenshot of the possession stats in the final moments of United’s crushing 4-1 defeat by Manchester City – it showed Pep Guardiola’s side had enjoyed 92 per cent possession in the previous 15 minutes of the match.
‘Still can’t get my head around that!’ Neville wrote. ‘However City aren’t just better on the pitch. A new dawn for United with Richard Arnold as CEO and a new manager incoming but yesterday was a fitting memorial to the “Ed Woodward/Glazer“ last 10 years of mismanagement.’
Gary Neville savaged Manchester United once again the morning after their Man City defeat
City ran out 4-1 winners against United with a merciless display against their rivals
Neville remarked upon it at the time in his match commentary for Sky Sports, saying: ‘Ninety-two per cent possession for City? They (United) have given up. I get the fact that it’s hard, they are playing against a top team but they are walking around the pitch. It’s nowhere near good enough.
‘I don’t think the scoreline it’s the problem, it’s the response to going 3-1 down that’s been the biggest problem for me. They have absolutely thrown the towel in.’
City swept their rivals aside with a magnificent display on Sunday – Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez scored two goals each in a performance that underlined the stark reality of the difference between the two sides.
The defeat also saw United surrender a place in the top four to Arsenal, who are now a point ahead of Ralf Rangnick’s side and with three games in hand, have a real opportunity to cement their place in next season’s Champions League.
Despite such a miserable scoreline on Sunday, Neville clearly sees reason for optimism over United’s future.
Richard Arnold took the reigns from Ed Woodward in the day-to-day running of the club on February 1 and will oversee United’s appointment of a new long-term manager at Old Trafford.
The two leading candidates are Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax boss Erik ten Haag.
Interim manager Rangnick, who will have a hand in appointing the next full-time United manager, said Ten Haag is ‘one of the best coaches in Europe’ in an interview with Sky over the weekend.
Riyad Mahrez added a double in the second-half, as City tore United to shreds
Kevin De Bruyne scored twice as City crushed their rivals with a brilliant display
Neville said that United ‘gave up’ towards the end of the second half against City
But whoever succeeds Rangnick in the Old Trafford dugout will have their work cut out in cutting the gap between United and City, as Neville made clear on Sky Sports.
‘The first thing to say is that Manchester City were outstanding, particularly in the second-half,’ he said.
‘But at the end of the game, Manchester United finished like an absolute shower. They were a disgrace in the last 25 minutes.
‘It’s the first time Ralf Rangnick has taken them against a proper team and they have been given a proper doing.’
