Neville hits back at Piers Morgan over "absolutely horrendous" Man Utd criticism
Gary Neville has hit back at Piers Morgan following a Twitter attack over his Manchester United allegiances.
The Red Devils endured a humiliating 5-0 defeat to fierce rivals Liverpool on Sunday to pile the pressure on United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Sky Sports pundit Neville has jumped to the defence of his former United teammate in recent weeks despite United failing to win in the Premier League since 19 September.
Neville’s loyalty to United, and pal Solskjaer in particular, has led to widespread criticism amid growing calls for the Norwegian to be sacked.
The former United right-back was targeted by Piers Morgan in a scathing Twitter attack on Monday but has since hit back at the TV personality.
Morgan tweeted: “Take your blinkers off, T-Bag – your mate Ole’s tactics yesterday were absolutely horrendous and United duly got the stuffing his woeful preparation deserved.
“He’s out of his depth and has to go – and I say that as an Arsenal fan who would love him to stay.”
In response to the dig, Neville simply replied: “No blinkers, Piers. Just decency.”
Will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still be managing Manchester United at the end of the season? Let us know in the comments section below.
Much like Solskjaer, Neville has found himself under fire following controversial comments on last week’s Monday Night Football, where he was accused of protecting the under-fire United boss who is a considered a friend.
“He should be under massive pressure because he’s been there for two years, 100 per cent,” Neville stated.
“But the club are not going to change him. I have Manchester United fans on my social media saying I won’t call him out because he’s your mate. No, I won’t. I won’t call out any manager and ask for them to be sacked.
“He’s my former teammate and I actually like him a lot. Manchester United have failed with two managers who are perceived as world class. I think you give him until the end of the season.”
However, following United’s thumping at Old Trafford on Sunday, Neville was given no choice but to pin the blame on Solskjaer as he admitted the Red Devils “capitulated”.
“This is as bad as it gets,” Neville told Sky Sports. “There’s no doubt Ole and his coaching staff have to take the blame for the lack of press. Whatever happened at Leicester has happened today. I can’t believe the tactics.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has played counter-attack since he’s been in the job, so why hasn’t he gone for that today?”
Despite growing speculation that Solskjaer now faces the sack, Neville still stood by his claims that he does not expect the Norwegian to lose his job.
“It’s been coming [the result] and there needs to be change and I think Ole will be given the chance," he said. "But there will be untold pressure from every source.”
