Gary Neville has blamed "clumsiness" for liking two tweets relating to news that the criminal charges against Manchester United star Mason Greenwood had been dropped.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed this afternoon that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had dropped all charges against the 21-year-old, who had been suspended by his club since last 2021.
In response, ex-United defender Neville liked and retweeted – before later removing the latter – a couple of posts referencing the notion of 'innocent until proven guilty'.
The Sky Sports pundit then claimed he felt the Twitter activity had been misinterpreted by angry football fans on the social media channel.

"I liked a tweet relating to the Mason Greenwood news this afternoon from Nazir Afzal (the former director of public prosecutions)," Neville tweeted.
"This like is being misinterpreted. It was a clumsy like as I obviously condemn any violence against women."
Greenwood was arrested in January 2021 and spent three nights in custody after police swooped on his £15,000-a-month rented home. He appeared in court in November of 2022, charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive control when a provisional trial date was set for November of 2023, before the charges were dropped.

On Thursday, Greenwood released a statement, saying he was "relieved that the matter is over".
He added: "I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support. There will be no further comment at this time."
United also released a statement following the news, which read: "Manchester United notes the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.
"The club will now conduct its own process before determining next steps. We will not make any further comment until that process is complete."
