Phil Neville ‘begins preliminary talks with former team-mate David Beckham’s Inter Miami about managerial role at MLS club’… six months before he is set to leave his post as England women’s boss

  • Phil Neville is set to leave his current England post later this year in July
  • Sarina Wiegman will replace him in the role following the delayed Olympics
  • But Neville is said to have held talks with Inter Miami about becoming their boss
  • Former team-mate David Beckham is part of an ownership group at the MLS side

Inter Miami have held initial talks with Phil Neville about taking over as boss at the MLS side, according to reports.

The 43-year-old is set to leave his current job as boss of England’s women’s team in July, and will be replaced in September by Netherlands head coach Sarina Wiegman after this year’s delayed Olympic Games.

And according to Sky Sports, he could already have found a potential next move after being approached by Inter Miami, who are part-owned by Neville’s former Manchester United and England team-mate David Beckham.

Neville was due to lead hosts England into the Women’s European Championships next year but he stepped down after the tournament was postponed until July 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Diego Alonso is currently the boss of Inter Miami but last month, the club said his future with the team ‘is still not determined’ after incorrect reports had emerged that he had been sacked.

Alonso was announced as the club’s first head coach in December 2019, having won three titles as head coach of Monterrey in Mexico’s Liga MX, including the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League.

But reports suggest he has been approached by the MLS side, who are part-owned by his former Manchester United and England team-mate

But his side finished 10th in the 14-team Eastern Conference last season and despite taking the final playoffs play-in spot were underwhelming performers after being among the league’s top spenders.

Following the season’s return after the enforced break due to coronavirus, the club then performed poorly again to the end of the season and finished bottom of their ‘MLS is back’ group.

That meant the Inter Miami won just seven of their 23 matches, losing 13 times, and has therefore called Alonso’s future into question.

Neville has also had his criticis leading England, but did take them to the 2019 World Cup semi-finals and victory in the SheBelieves Cup since taking over in 2018.
