Gary Lineker has admitted he is feeling “nervous” ahead of former side Leicester’s FA Cup final against Chelsea – and it worried he will cry on TV.
The Englishman, who scored 103 goals in more than 200 games for the Foxes, will be leading BBC show Match of the Day’s coverage of the Wembley fixture.
It marks the biggest day for the 60-year-old’s former side since their 2016 Premier League win, having never lifted the domestic trophy.
And Lineker has revealed that the occasion is starting to sink in, writing to his 7.9m Twitter followers: “Haven’t felt this nervous about a game since probably the semifinal of Italia ‘90.”
This refers to England’s dramatic World Cup fixture against eventual winners West Germany 31 years ago, the nearest the Three Lions had been to winning the tournament since 1966.
The Match of the Day host added: “At least I had the excuse of playing in that game and potentially letting the country down. Now I’m just a fan and it’s so much worse.
“Come on , let’s win it, just the once, please.”
The 60-year-old also made a prediction about his emotional state when the full-time whistle is blown at Wembley.
Speaking to The Sun, Lineker said: “I don’t normally get nervous when I broadcast and I didn’t get nervous as a player but I do get nervous when I watch — and definitely will for this final.
“It will be really hard after the game because they come to me straight after the final whistle.

“I’ll either have to hide my incredible disappointment at us losing a fifth final — which I shall do — but the most difficult thing will be if we win.
“I’ll struggle to hold it together and hold back the tears.
“In my old age, I’ve gone a bit soft and I get emotional at times, as I did when Leicester won the league in 2016 — although I wasn’t broadcasting live that night. I just hope I do have that problem.”
