My favourite shirt with Ray Houghton

MY FAVOURITE SHIRT – RAY HOUGHTON: Liverpool’s home shirt from 1989 when we were pretty much unbeatable… and the FA Cup final win against Everton that meant so much to the city

  • Ray Houghton won First Divison title with Liverpool in 1989 and 1992
  • Irish international also collected two FA Cups during his five-year Anfield spell
  • Listen to the latest episode of Mail Sport’s podcast ‘It’s All Kicking Off!’

It has to be the Candy shirt when we were at Liverpool. In those days we were pretty much unbeatable, finishing first, second, first, second before coming sixth in my last year at Liverpool.

I liked the shirt at Fulham and the Oxford one with WANG on it, which I won my first medal in, the 1986 League Cup, but the Candy one is the best.

The FA Cup final win against Everton in 1989 was a standout occasion in the shirt because of the memories and how much that game meant to the city, having gone through so much with Hillsborough

Liverpool’s home shirt from 1989 was picked by Ray Houghton as his favourite shirt in football

The Reds enjoyed an unprecedented period of success domestically and on the continent

Houghton won two league titles and two FA Cups with Liverpool during a five year spell
