Moyes in VAR rant over Liverpool decision that was ‘an utter disgrace’
David Moyes claims VAR “disrespected” West Ham following their decision not to give his team a penalty during Wednesday’s defeat to Liverpool. The Scot expects the PGMOL to issue an apology after failing to overturn the on-field decision from referee Chris Kavanagh.
With the score at 2-1 to the visitors, West Ham players were adamant they should have been awarded a late spot-kick. The hosts were pushing for an equaliser and were getting players in the Liverpool box in an attempt to do so.
Thiago Alcantara intercepted a Declan Rice pass but the ball fell to the feet of Danny Ings. The striker attempted to clip it past Thiago but as the Spaniard fell, the ball clearly struck his arm on two occasions.
West Ham fans fumed at the decision on social media. One fan on Twitter, @karenbeardy, claimed it was an “utter disgrace”.
Liverpool held on to the three points to boost their Champions League hopes and ensure West Ham remain just five points from the relegation zone. In a furious post-match rant, Moyes cannot believe VAR official Neil Swarbrick didn’t even recommend an on-field review by Chris Kavanagh.

Moyes vented: “VAR, for me, showed no respect whatsoever to us. You’ll probably hear them coming out with some rubbish about he [Thiago] needed to break his fall, but if you lunge, it’s your own fault for lunging and being out of control in the tackle.
“When you lunge for the ball, that completely nullifies anything they’re saying about breaking your fall. I think it’s a penalty kick.
“The hardest thing to take is the disrespect from VAR, that VAR wouldn’t have at least said to the referee that this might be worth having a look. That tells me they don’t see that as even close to a decision.
“I’m surprised. Somebody in VAR didn’t have enough football knowledge to understand that this could be close.”

Moyes admits he is not a fan of the handball law. But he thinks in its current state a penalty should have been given and expects an apology soon.
He added: “The handball rule has changed dramatically and I don’t like a lot of it, to be fair. Do I think the boy meant for it to hit his hand? No I didn’t.
“But he got his hand in the way of a ball going through made by his own actions. They might need to apologise to the football club because we’re trying to get points to be a Premier League team.”
Goals from Cody Gakpo and Joel Matip turned the game on its head after Lucas Paqueta had opened the scoring. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp can see why Moyes wanted a penalty.
He said: “I thought he [Thiago] just fell on the ball, but I can see why Moyesie would think different.”
