Mourinho's quest for second European trophy with Roma continues
Real Sociedad 0-0 Roma (agg 0-2): Jose Mourinho’s quest for a second European trophy in two seasons continues as the Italian side grind out a goalless draw to reach the Europa League quarter-finals
- Neither team could break the deadlock, which sent Roma through to quarters
- Chris Smalling had a goal ruled out before half-time due to handball in build-up
- Mikel Oyarzabal was close to scoring but the ball didn’t fully cross the line
Real Sociedad came close to upsetting Roma but ultimately failed to make anything of their second-leg tie, with the Italian side progressing to the Europa League quarter-finals.
The scrappy 0-0 draw was not without incident for Roma including a disallowed goal for the visitors that was overturned due to handball, but the home team were the ones to come closest to breaking the deadlock.
Captain Mikel Oyarzabal came tantalisingly close, appearing to score on his second attempt at finishing a curling corner past goalkeeper Rui Patricio, but the ball did not fully cross the line.
The Spanish side chased the aggregate score throughout a feisty second half, but Jose Mourinho’s side clung on to save their place in the next round.
Temperatures rose during seven minutes of injury time and moments before the whistle Sociedad’s night went from bad to worse, with Carlos Fernandez picking up a second yellow card to be sent off.
