Mourinho bemoans 'defensive individual mistakes' against Liverpool
Jose Mourinho bemoans Tottenham’s ‘defensive individual mistakes’ during 3-1 defeat by Liverpool and says there is ‘nothing new to learn’ from result
- Tottenham lost 3-1 to Liverpool in the Premier League on Thursday night
- Jose Mourinho rues the mistakes his side made as they lost to the champions
- Joe Rodon, Hugo Lloris and Eric Dier all played their part in defensive lapses
Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has lamented his side’s defensive display against Liverpool and especially the ‘individual mistakes’ that cost them.
Mourinho saw his Spurs team swept aside 3-1 at home in the Premier League by the Reds on Thursday night.
Summer signing Joe Rodon was caught out of position for Liverpool’s first goal, scored by Roberto Firmino, while Eric Dier and captain Hugo Lloris failed to clear the danger too.

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was at fault for Liverpool’s second goal as they lost 3-1
Goalkeeper Lloris will want to forget his role in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s strike to make it 2-0 to the visitors. The same will apply to Rodon for Liverpool’s third which was scored by Sadio Mane.
And reflecting on Tottenham’s performance, Mourinho bemoaned what he saw post-match.
‘It’s very hard to resist so many defensive individual mistakes – unless you score four goals against Liverpool,’ he told BT Sport.
‘Every time we came back the next mistake was coming.
‘The first ball was the beginning of everything because in the first minute a mistake and then a chance for Sadio Mane.
‘The team was confident, playing well. Son Heung-min’s goal was obviously offside.

‘Then when the game was stable we were very much in it but then comes the goal that is a replica of the first chance they had. So minute one and minute 48, we made the same mistake.
‘At half-time we lost Harry Kane and in the first minute of the second half another mistake, another goal. It was a good reaction to make it 2-1. The team were fighting but then one more mistake and it’s 3-1. It’s very difficult to fight against so many mistakes.
‘Some of the guys are very disappointed because some had a very good performance but we were punished by individual mistakes.
‘Nothing new to learn, at the highest level you make individual mistakes normally you’re punished and we were punished by individual mistakes so it’s nothing new.’
