Jose Mourinho could be on the cusp of a three game suspension following comments made to a referee while he was being sent off on Saturday.
In his Roma side’s clash with Verona, Mourinho was dismissed in stoppage time by match official Luca Pairetto having appeared infuriated with the referee’s display from the touchline.
Roma came from 2-0 down to score twice and rescue a draw during the Serie A encounter, but it still left his side down in eighth place and six points off Juventus inside the top four.
Jose Mourinho was sent off following a furious outburst at referee Luca Pairetto on Saturday
Mourinho was unhappy with decisions towards the end of the match and booted the ball away
The former Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham boss pointed at his head and appeared to make a telephone gesture towards Pairetto.
Mourinho then picked up a ball and kicked it away in frustration, which led to the Portuguese being shown a red card.
The Roma boss responded by gesticulating towards Pairetto and went to speak to him before being held back by goalkeeping coach Nuno Santos.
Mourinho then left the sidelines, but not before making a point of going over to hug his opposite number, Verona coach Igor Tudor.
Mourinho also made a telephone gesture aimed at the referee which led to the sending off
He then waved goodbye to the Roma crowd before dishing out some instructions to one of his coaches before heading for the tunnel.
Now according to Italian daily La Stampa via journalist Giovanni Capuano, Mourinho accused Pairetto of ‘being sent by Juventus’ and that his comments could lead to him picking up a touchline ban.
He wrote on Twitter: ‘At the moment of the expulsion Mourinho yelled towards Pairetto: “They sent you on purpose… Juve sent you”. All under the eyes of the federal inspectors who transcribed the report. The Portuguese is looking towards a two or three-match ban. (#LaStampa)’
Mourinho had to be held back by coaching staff, such was his fury at the end of the game
Pairetto’s father, Pierluigi, held the position of Italian vice chairman of UEFA referees committee at the time of the Calciopoli scandal from 2006 – which surrounded Juventus and other teams of being involved in match fixing by selecting favourable referees through a series of telephone calls.
Pierluigi was given a 42-month ban from football and a 16-month prison sentence, but he was later acquitted.
The case came to light after thousands of hours of phone calls were unearthed via wire-tapped phone calls.
