Mount says Chelsea players must take flak for recent form amid Lampard sack talk
Mason Mount has admitted the focus is on Chelsea’s players after their fifth defeat in eight games on Tuesday night.
Leicester extended Frank Lampard’s miserable run with Wilfred Ndidi and James Maddison making it 50 Premier League goals conceded away from home since the start of the Blues boss’s reign.
It has intensified talk that owner Roman Abramovich could act with concerns that the club are drifting away from title contention despite their huge summer expenditure.
But Mount insists the focus should be on the players. He said: “We know we are better than that.
“We have to have a look at ourselves, look at how we played, see where we can improve and come back stronger next game.”
“We were beaten by the better side,” he added.
“We know they are a very good team and coming into the game we knew how tough it would be. They set up very well and sometimes you have to put your hands up and say they were better on the night.
“They took their chances. Two goals before half-time affected us and makes it difficult when you’re coming out in the second half. When you’re clinical in front of goal you are going to win games. We had a couple but we didn’t score.
“We are disappointed we didn’t win the game. We know we are better than that. We have to have a look at ourselves, look at how we played, see where we can improve and come back stronger next game.”
Chelsea sit eighth in the Premier League, five points off a Champions League place. Lampard has backers at the club in former team-mate and Technical Director Petr Cech and chief transfer negotiator Marina Granovskaia.
The west Londoners’ board will also point to the way that both Manchester United and Arsenal have come through difficult runs to stabilize their form.
And Lampard has home games to come – after Sunday’s FA Cup Fourth Round tie against Luton – against Wolves and Burnley in which he will hope his side are able to grab confidence-boosting wins.
Mount added: “We are on a learning curve. Every day we need to get better, on the training ground and when we play. It takes time. We are definitely going to get there.
“We are getting to know each other more and more, and hopefully by the end of this season we will be in a good place.”
