Mount dropped, Havertz starts: Thomas Tuchel names first Chelsea team vs Wolves
Thomas Tuchel will take charge of his first match as Chelsea manager against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday night and he’s already made some big changes.
The former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain manager replaced Frank Lampard as Blues boss this week and has already imprinted his own style on the team.
Mason Mount, who was named captain in Lampard’s last match in charge against Luton Town, has been dropped from the starting XI. He has only been left out of a Premier League starting line-up twice for Chelsea this season.
Mount had started the last 10 games of Lampard’s reign but could face a fight to impress the new boss.
Two of Tuchel’s compatriots, Antonio Rudiger and Kai Havertz are also included in the starting XI but there’s no place for Timo Werner.
It’s been suggested he has gone for a back-three, with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell operating at wing-back.
Chelsea vs Wolves
Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Thiago Silva, Chilwell, Kovacic, Jorginho, Ziyech, Havertz, Hudson-Odoi, Giroud
Wolves XI: Patricio, Coady, Boly, Kilman, Semedo, Ait-Nouri, Neves, Dendoncker, Adama, Podence, Neto
Eduoard Mendy starts in goal, with Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Rudiger providing a solid base in front of the goalkeeper.
Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho look set to provide the base in midfield, with Havertz and Hakim Ziyech set to provide support to Olivier Giroud.
Another option could be they are playing a 4-2-3-1 with Ziyech and Hudson-Odoi in the wide roles and Havertz behind Giroud.
Chelsea start the match in 10th and are seven points of their opponents Wolves.
A win for Chelsea could see them climb as high as seventh in the Premier League table.
The Blues have won just one of their past five league matches heading into this one.
