Morgan Schneiderlin admits to huge Man Utd ‘regret’ after demanding to quit club

Morgan Schneiderlin has admitted he rues his decision to depart Manchester United saying that he “will remember it all his life".

The now 32-year-old joined the side in July 2015 after impressing for Southampton.

But it was a relatively short-lived tenure in the northwest, with the Frenchman leaving to Everton just 18 months later.

"I learned a lot from my departure from Manchester United. I had played 40 matches the previous season with Manchester", Schneiderlin told L'Equipe with transcription from Sport Witness.

"When I come back from the Euros, I take ten days off and I play very little for three, four months. Then, I have Ronald Koeman and Everton who are pushing hard to get me, every day, from October."

Having endured a difficult first season under Louis van Gaal, the midfielder found himself even more out of favour when Jose Mourinho took over the following term. Frustrations boiled over and the player saw no other choice but to make the move to Everton.

The Premier League star joined for £25 million – but it was a tricky first season under Louis van Gaal. And it was even harder under Jose Mourinho in the following campaign.

"I will remember it all my life: I should have played against Liverpool, starter, and the coach [Mourinho] comes to see me. He tells me he doesn't feel me inside the group.

"I tell him that indeed, with what has happened in the last three months, I am not in it and I want to go to Everton. I regretted it very quickly."

The midfielder moved to the Toffees in January 2017, uniting with former Saints manager Koeman. The transfer fee was as much as £24 million – but appearances were once again sporadic and Schneiderlin eventually was shipped back to his home nation, moving to Nice for an undisclosed fee in 2020.

"Even if it went very well at Everton, when you play for Manchester United, when you're at a club like that, it's not for a moment of doubt that you have to question everything," he said.

"Look at Ander Herrera: the first year I arrived, he was on the bench; he persevered, and today he is at PSG."
