Montpellier star celebrates by eating Haribo sweet – before VAR rules goal out
Montpellier ace Andy Delort was left embarrassed after an exuberant celebration was made redundant by VAR.
Delort thought he had net the opening goal against bitter rivals Nimes in Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash.
He celebrated by eating a red crocodile Haribo sweet with the animal being a key figure on Nimes’ club badge.
Though Delort was left red-faced with VAR ruling his strike out due to an offside in the build-up.
Delort’s blushes were spared slightly as he did find the scoresheet later on, netting an equaliser as the Derby du Languedoc finished 1-1.
The result leaves Montpellier in eighth in Ligue 1 while Nimes may be happier with the point as they are involved in a relegation battle.
Delort has been linked with a move to the Premier League with Wolves and Newcastle reportedly interested.
Though Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin is hoping to persuade him to stay by offering him the captaincy next season.
“I really appreciate him, he is, for me, the leader of the group. If one day he is no longer here, we will lose a lot,” Nicollin told Midi Libre.
“I hope that he will be well in his head, that he will still give many years to me. May he be my captain of La Paillade next year.”
Delort has experience in England having spent time with Wigan in 2014-15, though failed to score in 11 Championship appearances.
He said: “In England, it is physical, it is a fight for 90 minutes. I played over there, I know how it is.
“When I arrived, they made me put on 4 or 5 kgs, I had enormous arms. I am already 84kg.”
