Moises Caicedo may have blocked his own Chelsea transfer after hasty decision
Football Digest: Pochettino ruthlessly exiles three players from Chelsea HQ
Chelsea target Moises Caicedo may have effectively blocked his own move to Stamford Bridge. The decision to sign a new contract earlier this year has put Brighton in a strong bargaining position with the Blues, who recently had a big-money offer rejected by the south coast outfit.
Caicedo saw his wages go through the roof when he penned a new four-year deal at the Amex Stadium. The midfielder’s superb performances were rewarded with a boosted pay packet back in March after top clubs showed serious interest over the winter transfer window.
While the Ecuadorian will be more financially secure as a result, it may have ruined his chances of securing a big move this summer. Chelsea’s latest bid tipped the scales at an eye-watering £80million, but it still wasn’t enough to sway Brighton.
With Caicedo under contract until 2027 and the Seagulls facing little pressure to cash in, they are reportedly demanding in excess of £100m.

Frustratingly for Caicedo, who is believed to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, his prior contract situation would likely have seen Brighton accept an £80m offer, given the risk of his value plummeting towards the end of his deal.
Unlike Alexis Mac Allister, who joined Liverpool for £35m at the start of the summer, Caicedo’s long-term contract contains no release clause. The 21-year-old has therefore been left powerless unless Chelsea stump up a nine-figure sum.

The Blues may have pulled the trigger in January or last summer, when co-owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital raised the bar for transfer spending in a single window. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad is still far from complete, and there is more work to be done before the start of the season.
The new Chelsea boss has already made it clear that he needs another midfielder as soon as possible. It remains to be seen whether they switch focus to Southampton’s Romeo Lavia in the wake of their Caicedo rejection.
“At the moment, we are working to reinforce the midfield and other areas also,” said Pochettino. “I think the players that are here on the tour are in our plans, Chelsea’s plans.
“At the moment, I have nothing to say about the players we have here. We are working very hard to try to add more players in different areas and I hope that is possible soon.”
