Mohamed Salah to ‘reach Liverpool contract agreement soon’ with Michael Edwards

Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards plans to tie Mohamed Salah down to a new contract before departing the club next summer, according to reports.

Edwards announced earlier this month that he will be leaving Anfield when his current contract expires at the end of the season, vacating a position he has held since November 2016.

Over the past five years he has helped propel Liverpool back to the top of European football, playing a key role in the signings of Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker to name a few, while also negotiating Philippe Coutinho's hefty nine-figure transfer to Barcelona.

And before he waves goodbye to the Kop next year, Team Talk claim Edwards is expecting to go out on a high by finally tying Salah down to fresh terms.

The Egyptian has just over 18 months remaining on his current Reds deal, sparking fears that he could walk out on the club in the near future.

It is believed the two parties have so far been unable to reach an agreement over his salary, as Liverpool chiefs are apprehensive about handing him a more lucrative deal just seven months shy of his 30th birthday.

However, Edwards is understood to be confident of getting an extension over the line, which would be a superb final act as sporting director before his departure next July.

Salah has been in scintillating form for Jurgen Klopp's side again this term, registering 16 goals in as many appearances.

Successfully negotiating his extension would be a major triumph for Edwards, who is set to be replaced by his assistant Julian Ward when he waves goodbye to Liverpool.

The departing director said in a statement: “To be part of this club during this period has been a privilege due to the people I have been fortunate enough to work with and the success we have enjoyed.

“I had always planned to cap my time at the club to a max of 10 years. I’ve loved working here, but I am a big believer in change. I think it’s good for the individual and, in a work setting, good for the employer, too.

"Over my time here we have changed so many things (hopefully for the better) but someone new brings a different perspective, new ideas and can hopefully build (or change) on the things that have been put in place beforehand.

“Julian has been building up the skill set for this role for many years. Last year, he took on the role of assistant sporting director and over the past 12 months he has been introduced to other facets of the role that are vital to its success. I believe he is ideal for the role.

“Over the coming season I will continue to support him as we complete the leadership transition.”
