Mo Salah bags six-minute hat-trick – and ‘is back just in time for Man City’

Mohamed Salah came off the bench to score the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history as Liverpool obliterated Rangers 7-1 on Wednesday night.

Liverpool got off to the worst possible start when Rangers scored the game's opening goal just 17 minutes in. And Scott Arfield's strike was the Ibrox side's first goal in the European competition in 12 years – a record that Liverpool wouldn't have wanted to help break.

But the Reds quickly turned the game on its head with a Roberto Firmino double, followed by strike from under-fire striker Darwin Nunez. However, it was the Egyptian winger Salah who stole the show when he emerged from the bench in the second period.

Salah made his impact felt just minutes after his introduction, then hit the net again just four minutes later. But he wasn't done there and rounded off his goal blitz 120 seconds after that, and the Reds wrapped up the game through Harvey Elliot three minutes before time.

And Salah's treble was the quickest one ever scored in the Champions League, with only six minutes and 12 seconds between his first and third goals, Opta Joe reported. The 30-year-old's struggled to find his feet this season, and his resurgence against Rangers couldn't of come at a better time for the Reds who go up against Manchester City on Sunday.

Salah's heroics were celebrated on Twitter by football reporter James Pearce who roared after the attacker's last strike: "GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SALAH HAT-TRICK, he's definitely back." And his emphatic declaration prompted a fan who felt the same to respond: "Just in time for Sunday!."

The Reds will have a hard time keeping the likes of Man City star Erling Haaland quiet at Anfield when the weekend arrives. Just like Salah, Haaland broke a hat-trick record this season when he bagged three successive ones in the Premier League.
