Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has provided an updated on defender Pablo Mari after he was stabbed in a shopping centre in Italy.
Speaking to reporters after the Gunners' 2-0 Europa League defeat at PSV, Arteta: "I just found out. I know Edu has been in touch with his relatives. He's in hospital but he seems to be okay."
An Arsenal club statement reads: "We have been in contact with Pablo’s agent who has told us he’s in hospital and is not seriously hurt. Our thoughts are with Pablo and the other victims of this dreadful incident."
Spaniard Mari, who is on loan at Serie A club Monza this season, is one of six people to have been attacked, with a 46-year-old man having been arrested. Tragically, one of the victims has lost their life.
The incident occurred on Thursday (October 27) afternoon at the Milanofiori shopping center in Assago, Milan. According to Rai News, a man took a knife from supermarket Carrefour before attacking customers seemingly at random, including Mari.
It's claimed members of the public rushed the attacker, who was subsequently detained by law enforcement agencies. Investigators have ruled out terrorism as a possible motive at this time.
One witness, a young girl, said: "Now that we are far away we are calmer but we were really terrified, we did not understand what was happening, we saw people running away."
Mari, 29, and his wife Veronica Chacon have one child together, a son called Pablo Jr who was born in 2018. The couple married in the summer after dating for a number of years.
Mari was one of Arteta's first signings at the Emirates, initially joining on loan from Brazilian side Flamengo in 2020 before signing permanently later that year.
