Mike Tindall describes disgraceful scenes after breaking up bloodbath fight
Former England rugby star Mike Tindall has revealed he broke up a fight between two blood-soaked England fans at the Euro 2020 final as they clashed in front of crying children.
Sunday's final at Wembley descended into chaos as ticketless fans stormed the stadium and gained entry illegally by forcing their way past stewards and into the stands.
Fights had already erupted outside the stadium as boozed-up supporters threw bottles and chucked litter all along Wembley Way, which Tindall – who attended with wife Princess Zara – described as a "disgrace".
Inside the stadium wasn't much better, as fans with tickets were angered by the attempts of scores of people breaking in and occupying other people's seats, while blocking the view of others.
Speaking of his experience of the match on The Good, The Bad & The Rugby podcast, Tindall told co-hosts Alex Payne and James Haskell: ""A guy was there the whole time, smashed out of his face, literally didn't watch any of the game anyway, he was just too busy shouting at supporters that they should be standing on their feet, ends up getting into a fight with another one that's straight behind my seat.
"It got to a stage where this guy literally was trying to pile this guy in the face, there was a kid next to us, there was a kid on the other side crying because he couldn't see the game because of all the guys stood in the galley way and I just pulled these guys apart, said to one of them 'What are you doing? Just what are you doing?' And you know, he wandered off, blood all over him. The guy on the floor had blood all over him."
In quotes carried by Wales Online, a source told The Sun: "Tensions had got a bit heated near to where Zara and Mike were sitting because it had got quite crowded.
“Two fans ended up in a punch-up and Mike had to step into save the day. He stood between them and pulled them apart before stewards could get them under control.
“Unfortunately some blood ended up near Zara and she had to use a tissue to mop it up."
Police officers even clashed with fans outside the stadium as the match was going on, while stewards inside the ground were virtually powerless to stop those who had forced their way in.
It was supposed to be a proud night for English football as the national team competed in their first major final for 55 years, but Tindall believes the whole occasion was tarnished, particularly for the younger members of the crowd.
He continued: "I was just like you know these kids, what are they learning about going to a live football game? I was trying to put some balance on it but there wasn't balance, it was just—And then going out and seeing the amount of smashed bottles on the way out, you could feel people being nervous walking out of there."
Tindall assessed that Wembley Way was littered with "people who just generally didn't seem to care about anything" and blasted those responsible, stating that he felt it had "undermined" the good work of the football team in uniting the country.
"We all knew that if England won, it would be the best night ever, if they lost, it's like board up your shops," he added. "Why do we have to have that mentality? It's just absolutely ridiculous and it was an unsavoury environment to be in, and as I say, I wouldn't have enjoyed being there if I had had my kids there."
