Stretford Police have confirmed the arrest of a Middlesbrough supporter who watched last night’s stunning FA Cup upset at Old Trafford for allegedly leaving their child unattended at a hotel while they celebrated the fourth-round triumph. It was a night to remember for the promotion-chasing Championship club, who continued their impressive march under new boss Chris Wilder, defying the odds to knock Manchester United out on penalties (7-8) after coming from behind to draw 1-1.
Understandably, the occasion and historic result led to plenty of ‘Boro celebrations but for one irresponsible supporter, the night ended in shame.
The fan is alleged to have left their 11-year-old child behind at a hotel while they celebrated the victory, prompting concern from the youngster’s mother.
Stretford Police have since confirmed they took care of the child as the mother made her way down from Teesside.
A statement on their Twitter account read: “‘Boro away fan arrested for child neglect last night, after choosing to leave his 11yr child in the hotel after the game whilst he went into town celebrating their victory drinking.
“We have looked after the child with an unhappy mum on her way down from N/East to collect him.”
Middlesbrough were up against it from the very first whistle after United interim boss Ralf Rangnick named a full-strength side following the mini mid-season break.
Cristiano Ronaldo spearheaded United’s attack but the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could only fire wide from the penalty spot in the first half.
United did take the lead though when Jadon Sancho, who has endured a difficult start to life in red following his £72million from Borussia Dortmund, fired home following a deflection.
There was some controversy as Boro levelled though with Duncan Watmore clearly handling the ball before teeing up Matt Crooks.
However, the arm was not deemed intentional meaning the goal was given to the delight of the travelling supporters.
The game then went the distance after United squandered a number of notable chances. Bruno Fernandes missed the best of the bunch, firing off the post with the goal at his mercy.
After 120 minutes and 13 faultless spot-kicks, it was Anthony Elanga who fluffed his lines, firing over the crossbar to send the underdogs through for the fifth round.
Middlesbrough boss Wilder paid tribute to the travelling supporters who made all the difference in the face of adversity, dedicating the victory to the club’s fans.
“The game is nothing without supporters,” said Wilder, who also won at Old Trafford last season with Sheffield United. “It makes the game special, and it makes nights like this special.
“It’s what this competition is all about – a team that’s expected to get through up against world-class players, with huge transfer fees. That’s why everyone loves it, that’s why it’s special and it’s just been a magical night.
“We’ve recovered from a disappointing first half, where we turned the ball over too cheaply, to hang on in there until half-time and then come out in the second half and show a bit more belief and composure. We created a few decent chances, stuck in there and then all of a sudden, the game evened itself out.
“The longer the game went on, the more players began to believe they could get that result we were after.”
