Michael Owen backs Liverpool to bounce back after a dip this season

Michael Owen claims there are ‘so many reasons’ Liverpool have dipped this season after their crushing 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid… but the former Reds striker backs Jurgen Klopp’s side to bounce back again

  • Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid: Reds are TORN APART by Champions League holders
  • Jurgen Klopp watched his side suffer a humiliating first leg defeat at Anfield
  • Michael Owen has backed Liverpool to bounce back from a difficult season

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has claimed there are multiple reasons behind the club’s under-par season following their 5-2 Champions League defeat against Real Madrid.

Liverpool last defeat against the Spanish champions came in the Champions League final last season, a campaign which saw the Jurgen Klopp’s side fall narrowly short of a quadruple.

A rematch in the last-16 of the Champions League saw Liverpool exposed, with Real Madrid fighting back from 2-0 down to score five goals at Anfield.

The result continued difficult season for Liverpool, who saw their defence of both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup come to an end, while the Reds currently lie eighth in the Premier League.

Owen claimed the decline this season could not be attributed to a single issue, with multiple factors contributing.

The BT Sport pundit backed Liverpool to address their current slump, highlighting the quality within the squad.

‘It happens,’ Owen said. ‘In the Covid hit season, Liverpool lost six in a row here at Anfield, which was unprecedented.

‘Every Liverpool fan will have different reasons. Some will say the ownership. It is never one thing. Football isn’t like that.

‘You have injuries at the start with big players out, a lack of confidence, maybe a lack of investment in midfield. There are so many reasons why you could pick holes.

‘They have had this before and they bounced back.

‘They will do so again. There are too many good players here.’

Liverpool face the daunting task of attempting to overturn the first leg deficit next month against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Klopp’s side also still hold hope of qualifying for next year’s competition through the Premier League.

Consecutive wins over Everton and Newcastle have boosted their top four hopes.

Liverpool are currently seven points behind fourth placed Tottenham but have two games in hand on the North London side.
