Ralf Rangnick will take charge of Manchester United until the end of the season after agreeing a six-month deal with the club, but Michah Richards is confused by the ‘massive overreaction’ to his appointment.

Former Manchester City star Micah Richards has questioned Manchester United’s decision to appoint Ralf Rangnick and slammed the ‘massive overreaction’ to his arrival.

Rangnick has been appointed by United until the end of the season following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer, although the German is yet to be officially unveiled yet.

It is thought that Rangnick will be in the dugout for United’s clash against Crystal Palace on December 5, but administrative delays mean that Michael Carrick will remain as caretaker manager for now.

Rangnick arrives with a lot of expectation and excitement, but Richards is puzzled by the mass overreaction to the news.

When fans have been so frustrated with the end of the Solskjaer era, anything new can be considered appealing, but Rangnick is held in high regard as he is renowned for revolutionising modern German tactics.

Rangnick is known for founding gegenpressing, inspiring a wave of managers from his homeland, with fellow Premier League managers Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel influenced by his philosophy.

However, Richards isn’t on the same bandwagon as most fans, and told Radio 5 Live’s The Monday Night Club: “You know why I’m groaning? I’ll tell you why I’m groaning.

“Everyone’s making out like Rangnick is some sort of messiah. Like he’s come to this country and he’s got five league titles and a Champions League. It’s a massive, massive overreaction.”

DON’T MISS

Richards was quick to say that he wasn’t doubting his credentials, but honed in on the overreaction: “No, no, no! I’m definitely not that.

“You’ve always got to give someone a chance and time. I’m just talking about everyone jumping on the bandwagon like he’s the messiah.”

It’s been revealed that at the end of the season Rangnick will take a consultant role within the club while a long-term replacement takes over, but United’s decision has also been questioned by Richards.

“Who is going to be the manager? Rangnick, he’s got the consultancy after the six months.

“I get him coming to Manchester United and I actually think it’s really good for United to have a clear plan as to what they want to do, the style of play, the players that they’ll want to attract if that’s what he wants to do. So I get that part.

“But I don’t get the part that he’s coming in there for six months then someone is coming in as he takes a step back. I don’t get that.

“Who is he going to get in there?”

Mauricio Pochettino has been heavily linked with making the switch from Paris Saint Germain, and Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag is also in the running, as United look to get it right in the summer.
