Micah Richards almost came to blows with own security guard who ‘s*** himself’

Micah Richards has recalled almost getting into a scrap with a security guard while on punditry duty.

The former Manchester City and England defender has transitioned impressively into the media since calling time on his playing career, working with the BBC, Sky Sports and US network CBS. Being a pundit is accompanied by criticism from fans who disagree with their views.

But on one occasion, he was verbally abused by an individual who was supposed to be protecting him. Richards was on BBC duty for an FA Cup tie at Kidderminster when he was confronted by a security guard who made a wisecrack about his forgettable spell at Villa at the end of his career.

He recounted the tale on The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer. He said: “I’m dressed to the nines, I’ve got a suit carrier. This bag is nice, it’s a Lamborghini bag.

"I kid you not, the security guard, who’s supposed to be protecting me, said, ‘where’d you get that bag from, for all the money that stole at Aston Villa?’ I’m thinking to myself, ‘has he really just said that to me?’ He’s supposed to be taking me to the trucks so I can do my analysis and he’s giving me abuse.

“So I’ve said, ‘what did you say?’ He only doubles down and says it again. So I said to him, ‘go on, say that again if you’re hard’. And he says it again! He’s walking to me and I’m walking closer to him. And I’m thinking to myself, ‘he’s a big lad, he’s security, but I’ve got to protect myself’.

“So he comes up to my face. He doesn’t try to hit me but he’s seen how big I was and he’s absolutely s*** himself. I’m f-ing and jeffing, I’m saying you ‘f-ing this, you s***bag, you thought I wasn’t going to come back to you, now look at you’.

“In the end, he apologised but apparently he got sacked. I didn’t want him sacked. If we’re going to have a scrap as men, let’s have a scrap and move on.”
