Video footage has emerged on social media of an unhinged Mexico fan attacking his TV screen with a kitchen knife after Wednesday’s World Cup heartbreak. The distraught supporter didn’t take his country’s narrow group-stage exit well after a dramatic Group C finale.
Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1 at the Lusail Iconic Stadium, netting their first goals of the tournament through Henry Martin’s opener and Luis Chavez’s stunning free-kick. However, with Poland only losing 2-0 to Argentina, Robert Lewandowski and co snuck into the World Cup last 16 on goal difference.
The Poles scored the same number of goals as Mexico, but Saudi Arabia’s 95th-minute consolation strike meant the Central American side had conceded one more. But Gerardo Martino’s men were pushing for a goal anyway, with Poland unbelievably going through via fair play.
They had one less fair play point than Mexico, setting up an extraordinary ending where the latter either had to find another goal or hope that Poland received one more booking against Argentina. It didn’t fall in the Mexicans’ favour, though, and their World Cup campaign ended just as it felt like it was getting started.

It was an agonising way to exit the winter tournament, especially as Argentina had 72 per cent possession and 23 shots to Poland’s four. Lionel Messi also missed a penalty, with Wojciech Szczesny recording one of the performances of his career only to concede two.
The result was sure to love a sting 130 million population, but one fan seemingly took it harder than most. A social media clip shows a male in a Mexico shirt crying aloud, smacking his TV screen with his fists before picking up a kitchen knife and stabbing the glass while his screams intensified.

Argentina topped Group C by defeating Poland, bouncing back from their shock opening defeat to Saudi Arabia by also beating Mexico 2-0.
Messi will guide his team-mates into a favourable last-16 clash against Australia on Saturday, with high hopes of progressing into the quarter-finals to face the Netherlands or the USA.
But in the grand scheme of things, Mexico’s exit may have been a blessing in disguise for the devastated fan. Poland’s reward for beating them to second place is a date with reigning champions France in the next round.
