Football fans have been left baffled by the sight of FIFA president Gianni Infantino thrusting a bisht (traditional Arabian cloak) on the shoulders of Lionel Messi.

As the captain of Argentina, Messi had the enviable honour of taking the Golden Boot and lifting it alongside his jubilant teammates after La Abiceleste overcame France in a tense penalty shootout. However, just as he got his hands on the trophy, Infantino and the Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani quickly thrust a bisht onto the shoulders of the 35-year-old.

It would be fair to say Messi was slightly baffled during the brief encounter, but he eventually understood the honour it was to have the robe placed over him. However, the fascinating interaction between the now World Cup winner, Infantino, and Al Thani has left many of the footballing world confused.

“I cannot believe my eyes Messi really lifted the World Cup trophy while wearing a bisht,” one fan commented on social media. “LMFAO not them putting a bisht (traditional arab cloak) on Messi,” another added.

“They had Messi wearing the Bisht,” said one other amused supporter. However, many resident Qataris and members of the Arabian world could not contain their pride when the little Magician agreed to put on the cloak.

“Messi’ first World Cup victory photo has him wearing a bisht. Qatar has solidified their name in history. They represented Arabs all over the world. What an incredible ending to an incredible World Cup, and a well deserved victory for Argentina,” tweeted one very proud Qatari.

The bisht was embroidered with gold patterns and lining identical to the colour of the World Cup trophy. As a robe usually worn as a sign of immense prestige, it would not surprise you to hear that it is also commonly worn by secular officials, kings, imams, emirs, and many more individuals in high positions.

However, it is also worn for special celebratory occasions such as weddings or festivals such as the Islamic celebration of Eid. Nevertheless, the offering of the bisht to Messi is evidently a sign of respect towards the 35-year-old.

The Argentine kept the bisht when he lifted the trophy and also kept it on when he was posing for photos with the trophy.
