Messi fans think red-hot start to PSG season disproves Ronaldo theory

Superfans of Lionel Messi are convinced that they can finally end the debate about who is the greatest footballer of all-time by disproving a theory surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo.

The debate has been ongoing for well over a decade, and some started to switch from team Messi to team Ronaldo after the Portuguese star scored 24 goals for Manchester United in all competitions last season. Messi on the other hand, started to lose votes as he struggled to adjust to life at PSG, after ending his 17-year stay at Barcelona.

But the Argentine has now settled, and is looking closer to his former self once more. And fans feel as though they have finally wrapped up the debate, as Messi's 'average' 2022 is still statistically better than Ronaldo's calendar year so far.

One fan claimed to 'disprove the theory' on Twitter as they wrote: "Lionel 'finished' Messi in 2022: 26 games, 15 goal, 14 assists and three trophies." And they provided the stats for Ronaldo too, as they added: "Cristiano 'ageing like fine wine' Ronaldo in 2022: 26 games, 12 goals, one assist and no trophies."

Of course this sparked debate, as it always does with Messi and Ronaldo fans, but it seemed as though not many could argue with the facts. One fan joked: "Messi has more goals this year than Ronaldo has goals, assists and trophies this year, wow."

Another noticed the difference in Messi's assist stats, as they said: "Nah the difference in assists!" And one user honed in on the fact that Messi was not nominated for the Ballon d'Or awards, while Ronaldo was.

"The stats don't lie, how is Ronaldo picked and Messi isn't? CR7 doesn't even have the trophies to back it up." Messi's stats were slightly boosted by an incredible performance on Sunday, as PSG thumped Lille 7-1 away from home.

Messi scored and assisted during the game, setting up Kylian Mbappe for the fastest goal ever to be scored in Ligue 1. Mbappe put PSG ahead after just eight seconds, and the French giants went on to score three more before half-time.

Mbappe netted a hat-trick, while Neymar grabbed one and provided a trio of assists, and PSG are well on their way to being crowned champions again. The same can't be said for United though, as they are yet to even score a goal of their own making, let alone register a single point in the Premier League so far this season.
