Merson baffled by Liverpool’s transfer move and claims agent deserves knighthood
Paul Merson believes Ozan Kabak’s agent deserves a knighthood for getting him a move to Liverpool, simply because Schalke have won once all season.
Liverpool are close to signing Kabak, 20, from the Bundesliga side on a deal until the end of the season, with an option to make the move permanent.
Schalke have waited to sign a replacement for the youngster before giving Liverpool the green light to complete the deal, and are expected to sign Arsenal ’s Shkdoran Mustafi.
The move came as a surprise to many, as Kabak is highly rated and it was expected that the Reds would wait until the summer.
But for Merson, the move is a surprise because of Schalke’s league position. The German side are currently bottom of the Bundesliga table, with just one win in 19 games this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Arsenal player insisted Liverpool are simply trying to get bodies through the door after their injury crisis at the back.
“I mean the lad at Schalke, he can’t believe his luck. If you were his agent, you’d get knighted,” Merson said.
“He’s just gone to the champions, but they’ve won one game all season.
“I just don’t know [why Liverpool are interested], that’s shocked me.
“The lad at Preston [Ben Davies] is a decent player, he’s young, but it’s a massive jump.
“I just think they’re bodies. I think it comes thick and fast, these games.
“Sooner or later if Henderson got injured and one of the young lads gets injured you’re left with nobody. You can’t be left with nobody.
“The lad at Schalke, his agent needs to be knighted.”
