Melbourne Victory assistant coach Steve Kean will take charge after Grant Brebner’s sacking
Former Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean has been appointed interim coach of struggling Melbourne Victory following the sacking of Grant Brebner.
Kean joined the Victory’s coaching staff in the off-season as an assistant to Brebner.
But the 53-year-old Scotsman will take charge until the end of the season after Brebner was axed in the wake of the last-placed Victory’s disastrous 7-0 weekend loss to Melbourne City at AAMI Park.
“I would like to thank Steve for taking on the role temporarily,” Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro said.
“Our expectation for the remainder of the season is that the players will play with the determination and commitment that our club is accustomed to.”
Assisting Kean will be Jean-Paul de Marigny, who returned the Victory last month as the club attempted to give further support to the beleaguered Brebner,
However, the Victory’s second humiliating loss to City this season was the final straw, with Brebner relieved of his duties on Saturday night about 90 minutes after the embarrassing derby defeat.
Former Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory coach Tony Popovic seems the leading candidate to coach the Victory next season.
Others linked to the job include current Wellington Phoenix coach Ufuk Talay and former Melbourne Heart and Brisbane Roar boss John Aloisi.
Kean’s first game in charge will be the Victory’s battle with the Wanderers at Marvel Stadium on Friday night.
