McGinn claims his secret weapon is having ‘biggest bum in Premier League’
Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has claimed that having the 'biggest bum in the Premier League' has helped him become a better player.
McGinn has been a revelation since he arrived at Villa Park in a £2million deal from Hibernian.
The Scottish maestro netted the goal that punched Villa's ticket back to the Premier League back in 2019 in their Championship play-off final win over Derby County – and he's been one of the club's most consistent performers during their spell back in the top-flight.
McGinn's performances for Villa has attracted the attention of some of the Premier League's top sides, with both Manchester United and Liverpool linked with a surprise swoop for the midfielder this year.
Despite his high-profile admirers, McGinn has been subjected to criticism over his body from some people – but the Villa ace believes his body, and his big backside in particular, plays a big part in his physical style.
"I don’t think anyone runs the way I do," McGinn told The Telegraph. “I don’t think anyone has a backside the size of me. The easy perception of me when I’m not playing well is, ‘Oh, he’s not athletic, he’s not mobile’.
"That couldn’t be further from the truth. I am as fit as I have ever been. I feel I am as quick as I have ever been.
"The body shape one is also a challenge I have had to overcome and something I do use to prove people wrong.
Where do you think Aston Villa will finish under Gerrard this season? Let us know in the comments section.
"There’s certainly a pressure from the outside that every footballer should be ripped to shreds. I have always been comfortable – until Aston Villa got Kappa as their shirt manufacturer, then it started to become more of a challenge!
"I would like to see some of the pundits who slag off my body try on a medium-size Kappa shirt. It certainly has its own challenges."
The Villa midfielder has even found a way to use his ample backside to his advantage over the years.
And he revealed that he's studied the way that stars such as Paul Pogba and Eden Hazard have used their bodies during their time in the Premier League to help his own game.
McGinn added: “In the tight spaces when someone comes close, I try to use it to my advantage and spin away.
“Early in my career I used it every time I got the ball and it was no use because it was so obvious. Paul Pogba uses his body really well. Eden Hazard is the best of my era at using his backside. But they pick and choose. I have looked at how they use their bodies. It’s about having an uncertainty about your play."
