Maurizio Sarri and Jorginho 'could be reunited at Napoli this summer'

Maurizio Sarri and Jorginho ‘could be reunited at Napoli this summer’, with Serie A side keen to bring back their old boss to replace Gennaro Gattuso and Chelsea star’s agent admitting move would be a ‘wonderful idea’

  • Maurizio Sarri and Jorginho spent three years together at Napoli until 2018
  • Chelsea allowed Sarri to spend £57m on the midfielder after his appointment
  • Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis reportedly wants Sarri back as manager
  • Jorginho’s agent has hinted at a potential return to Naples for the midfielder

Napoli will look to roll back the years by reuniting their former manager Maurizio Sarri and midfielder Jorginho this summer, according to reports in Italy.

The pair enjoyed three years together in Naples before Sarri left to become Chelsea boss in 2018 and paid £57million to bring the player with him.

Sarri was sacked after just a season at Stamford Bridge and is currently a free agent after losing his job at Juventus at the end of last season.

But according to RAI Sport and Radio Kiss Kiss, the Italian is now being lined up for a return to Serie A as a replacement for Gennaro Gattuso.

The former AC Milan midfielder is reportedly at odds with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who wants to bring Sarri in over the summer.

Although he didn’t win a trophy during his three years in Naples, the 62-year-old led the club to second place twice and impressed with his style of football.

Rafa Benitez has also been linked with a return to Napoli, but it is now claimed that De Laurentiis is set on appointing Sarri for a second time after seeing his club dumped out of the Europa League and Coppa Italia.

Should he make a return to Napoli, Sarri could be joined by Jorginho – the player most associated with his Sarri-ball philosophy – after the midfielder’s agent refused to rule out the prospect of a move back to Italy.

‘Sarri at Napoli with Jorginho is a wonderful idea,’ the star’s agent, Joao Santos, told Radio Kiss Kiss. ‘The player has two-and-a-half years left on his contract with Chelsea and an important salary.

‘It’s possible on a football level, certainly. We’d have to see what De Laurentiis thinks. Naples is a city that Jorginho loves very much, which marked an important part of his career.

‘Sarri is also an important coach for him, at which he expressed himself at the highest level.’

Jorgino, who scored in Monday’s 2-0 win over Everton, has found himself in favour at Chelsea under new boss Thomas Tuchel, but it remains to be seen what the German’s transfer plans are this summer.
