Mauricio Pochettino pressure ramped up as Chelsea hero suggests brutal sackings
Chelsea hero Florent Malouda says he no longer recognises his former club after Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital’s takeover at Stamford Bridge last year. The Frenchman, who spent six years playing for the Blues, would like to see the current owners take a leaf out of their predecessor Roman Abramovich’s book in opting for ruthless sackings over building a project.
With Abrahmovic at the helm, Chelsea won 18 major trophies over a 19-year stretch including five Premier Leagues, five FA Cups and two Champions Leagues. At the same time, the club was turning over managers like no tomorrow.
Thirteen head coaches, not including caretaker bosses, took the reigns at Stamford Bridge under Abrahmovic. Many of them won their fair share of trophies for the west Londoners yet only Jose Mourinho can boast three years in the dugout.
It was a brutal regime but very effective. Fast forward to the Chelsea of modern-day and there is a clear emphasis on long-term projects where managers are given more space to breathe. However, in their first season under Boehly and Co Chelsea weren’t even able to qualify for Europe as they slumped to a 12th place finish in England’s top-flight.
During a recent appearance on ex-Chelsea team-mate John Obi Mikel’s show, The Obi One Podcast, Malouda affirmed that Chelsea would benefit from the same cut-throat mentality of old as he compared Chelsea to the former iteration that he played for.
He said: “Even in a successful time, renowned managers were kicked out, even if you win. In Chelsea, there is no time to build the project, you must win now. In our time, people talked about ‘boring Chelsea, boring Chelsea’ – boring, but winning!

“I don’t really recognise them, except for the colour of the shirt. I think the club is using too many keywords about the project or whatever. It takes time to build anything of value but since the new ownership, I don’t see any stability from the management.
“I don’t want to speak about the players that they choose, they have their own process, but from the management, there is no stability, no clarity yet. So as a Chelsea fan, it is difficult for me to identify what I see.
“It’s not being harsh on them. I just don’t understand, and I’m very independent. I like when they win, and it hurts me when they lose, because people make fun of us, but I don’t understand. If I don’t understand (the project) – and most importantly, I think the players don’t understand.
“They repeat something, and they say, ‘oh, we came here for the project’. But the way it’s going, I wonder if there is a project. Everybody will tell you we want to win trophies. But now explain to us how.”
